Evolutionary and developmental foundations
I. The core knowledge thesis What are the brain and cognitive systems that allow humans to play baseball, compute square roots, cook soufflés, or navigate the Tokyo subways? It may seem that studies of human infants and of non-human animals will tell us little about these abilities, because only educated, enculturated human adults engage in organized games, formal mathematics, gourmet cooking, ...
متن کاملEvolutionary and Developmental Modules
The identification of biological modules at the systems level often follows top-down decomposition of a task goal, or bottom-up decomposition of multidimensional data arrays into basic elements or patterns representing shared features. These approaches traditionally have been applied to mature, fully developed systems. Here we review some results from two other perspectives on modularity, namel...
متن کاملTree Contractions and Evolutionary Trees
An evolutionary tree is a rooted tree where each internal vertex has at least two children and where the leaves are labeled with distinct symbols representing species. Evolutionary trees are useful for modeling the evolutionary history of species. An agreement subtree of two evolutionary trees is an evolutionary tree which is also a topological subtree of the two given trees. We give an algorit...
متن کاملCyclic Permutations and Evolutionary Trees
Given a tree T with leaf set X, there are certain ways of arranging the elements of X in a circular order so that T can be embedded in the plane and ‘preserve’ this ordering. We investigate some new combinatorial properties of these ‘circular orderings’. We then use these properties to establish two results concerning dissimilarity maps on X that are induced by edge-weighted trees with leaf set X.
متن کاملEvolutionary Ecology and Developmental Instability
The past decade has seen a resurgence of interest in developmental instability, reflected in fluctuating asymmetry, as a concept in evolutionary ecology. Many investigations interpret fluctuating asymmetry in populations or subsets of populations as reflecting the existence of, or at least the potential for, natural or sexual selection. However, the biological and nonbiological factors under l...
